Canada calls purported killings of gay men in Chechnya ‘reprehensible,

Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs called the alleged detention and killings of gay and bisexual men in Chechnya “reprehensible,” as LGBT rights groups called on the international community to act.

In a statement released Saturday, Chrystia Freeland called on Russian authorities to investigate the reports and “to immediately ensure the safety of all persons in Chechnya who may be at risk due to their sexual orientation.”

The allegations that up to 100 men are being detained prompted a protest outside the Russian embassy in London on Wednesday.

Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta has reported that at least three of those men have been killed in secret prisons described as “concentration camps.”

It also reported threats from Chechen religious leaders of  “reprisals” for its coverage of the issue.

Gay Russian violinist comes out on social media

Artem Kolesov, first violinist of the Chicago-based Yas Quartet, has been outraged by reports of gay oppression in Chechnya.

So he decided to publish a video testament on being young, Russian and gay.

Artem, 23, has addressed his statement in Russian (with English subtitles) to his homeland, aware that in doing so he could face penalties if ever he returns.

This brave, heartfelt, sometimes tearful confession is compelling viewing.

It is as much about being Russian in the 21st century as it is about being gay.

Gay man who outed a trans Survivor contestant has been fired from his job

The gay man who outed a fellow Survivor contestant as transgender to ostensibly avoid elimination on last week’s episode has now been fired from his job as a real estate agent, according to North Carolina’s Greensboro News & Record.

Since Wednesday’s episode of Survivor, when Jeff Varner callously outed his opponent Zeke Smith, who was also up for elimination, the Internet has erupted in outrage at Varner, whose appearance this season marks the third time he’s been on the long-running reality show contest.

Varner tearfully apologized to Smith following his actions, but there was no erasing the damage done.

A former news anchor for Fox and CBS news affiliates, Varner, 50, was fired amid the uproar over his outing Smith during the episode that was shot 10 months ago in the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji.
